How to Play Snaps (The Card Game)

Snaps is a classic and simple card game, primarily for children, that relies on quick reactions and a bit of luck. Here's how to play:

Objective: To win all the cards in the deck.

Players: 2 or more (typically 2-4)

What You Need: A standard deck of 52 playing cards.

Gameplay:

  1. Dealing: The entire deck of cards is dealt face down as evenly as possible among all the players. It doesn't matter if some players have one more card than others. Players should keep their cards in a stack, face down, in front of them.

  2. Turning Cards: Players take turns flipping over the top card from their stack and placing it face up in a single pile in the center of the table. The order goes around the circle.

  3. "Snaps!" Trigger: When any two consecutive cards played in the center pile have the same rank (e.g., two 7s, two Queens), any player can shout "Snaps!". Here is more information about saying "Snaps!"

  4. Winning the Pile: The first player to shout "Snaps!" wins the entire center pile of cards and adds it to the bottom of their own face-down stack. If multiple players shout "Snaps!" at the same time, the player whose voice is heard first wins the pile. Information about determining who said "Snaps!" first.

  5. False Alarm: If a player shouts "Snaps!" incorrectly (i.e., the two top cards are not of the same rank), they must give one of their cards to each of the other players. If a player has no cards when they falsely call "Snaps!", then they are out of the game. Here is more information about consequences of false alarm.

  6. Continuing Play: Play continues with players turning over cards and watching for matching ranks.

  7. Winning the Game: The game continues until only one player has all the cards. That player is the winner. Here is how the game ends.
